If it Ain't broke, don't fix it...
Recently, as recent as a few minutes I ago, I deactivated my facebook account. I'll miss it, but it was going to far. At first with the whole college thing it was cool, because in order to be on it you needed a college email adress i.e. you couldn't be a thrity-six year old loser, or a fourteen year old girl showing her thong she got at DOTS out.
Then Mr. Mark Zuckerberg (the creater of facebook) went ahead and allowed high schoolers to access facebook. This was the first step to destruction. It was still OK though because high schools and colleges were completely seperated. High schoolers couldn't even request to be a college student's friend, and vice versa. It was still neccesary to have a college email adress for college students, but all you needed for a high school account was to merely pick a city, and a state. After that a list would come up and it was as easy as picking a school to get an account. High schoolers weren't associated with college know-it-all hippies at all which was good for all parties who were involved.
Then the shit hit the fan. Zuckerberg took another step toward disaster as he allowed high schoolers to become friends with college students and vice versa. Now there was no seperation and everybody became friends with everybody. Lots of people liked this, but that is because they're stupid as shit. More and more, almost daily, it seemed like facebook was becoming more and more like the scum that is myspace. It was still far better that myspace at this point, because almost all the accounts were students, but it was still horrible.
When we all though it had gone to far, facebook decides to allow "global groups." Pretty much eliminating the best thing that seperated facebook from myspace. Each group somebody is in is something that tells a fact about the person in that group. Whether it is political/funny/sports-related/etc. But now all was lost because it seemed everybody on facebook made a group like "The Largest Facebook Group Ever", "The Biggest Facebook Group Ever" or something alot like that. Everyone entered a bunch of these groups because they were fucking sick of declining a million invites a day. Groups were much better when they were within networks, but it quickly got out of control with global groups.
And that wasn't even the final straw. Facebook then decided to give you a news report everytime you logged on that was as dumb and as irrelevant as "Your friend wrote on somebody's wall." Well fucking good for him/her. Frankly I don't care at all that my friends are writing on other peoples "walls." Of course under the headline, ""Your friend wrote on somebody's wall," they actually show you what that person wrote. Like it matters at all. A really dumb idea all the way around because it is literally a complete waste of your time to read the facebook news which is synonymous with nonsese and stupidity. They also moved the once very important "group" section to the lower lefthand corner of your profile. That was it. I loved my groups. I was a proud member of most of them (the others i joined because I was sick of saying "decline").
Farewell facebook, you were cool for awhile. Hopefully this blog entry will inspire many to deactivate their accounts. Probably not, but I can only hope so. If anybody deactivates their account because of me then I can go to sleep happy. Mr Zuckerberg, a big fuck you to you. Go swim with some stingrays or somesing.
