NCAA Football Preview
I don't care about NCAA football as much as I do for the NFL, so this update will be much shorter in comparison to the in-depth analysis I did last week. Plus, the NCAA is wide open this year, and literally four-five teams could realistically have a shot for the championship. Therefore I am only going to disuss the top five teams, opposed to something like the top twenty five, or top fifty.
1)Notre Dame Fightin' Irish
Notre Dame had a phenomenal season last year. Their campaign started out undefeated and only hit a few bumps along the road. Being an independant school makes a perfect season that much harder for the Irish. Easily one of the hardest schedules in all of college football creates a very difficult situation for a team trying to make a run for the championship. Coach Charlie Weis has almost completed a 180 degree turn-a-round for one of the most storied college football teams. He plans to continue that this year with quarterback Brady Quinn, the pre-season Heisman favorite, wide-0ut Jeff Samardzija, explosive running back Demetrius Walker, and playmaking safety/return man Tom Zbikowski, Notre Dame looks to take that next step towards a national championship.
2)Ohio State Buckeyes
The Buckeyes got a lot of offense. They beat Notre Dame in a bowl-game last year, but that was a different team. That was a Buckeye defense that boasted four first round draft picks in April. They are no longer that team. Now they are an offensive team revolved around quarterback Troy Smith. Smith is elusive, fast, and can throw on the run. You will see an offense from Ohio State this year that rivals that of Texas last year. Wideout/Defensive back/kick returner/punt returner Teddy Ginn JR. is the most versatile athlete in years. They will be explosive, and coach Jim Tressell is defensive minded, so they will always be in close games. Count on them to take on Notre Dame in another bowl game, just don't count on them to be so succesful without AJ Hawk.
3)Florida Gators
The Gators are coming into year two with the Urban Meyer system. Chris Leak is a senior, who has been playing since he was a true freshman. Maybe this year he will be the all-american quarterback he was in high school, or he might be the confused, consistent loser he was in his sophomore year. I am a Gator fan, and I hope he is the all-american, but something tells me he won't neccesarily be perfect all year long. Just one mistake in college football and you're out. That's why the Gators fall just short of the other two this season.
4)West Virginia Mountaineers
I love them, they're cute, they have some cool uni's and most imporantly Kevin Mahler likes them. The only problem is that they just aren't as talented as teams like Florida, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. They play in the big east, meaning an undefeated season is guaranteed. That is if they beat Loiusville. I'm rooting for them, but I don't think they have enough.
5)Oklahoma Sooners
Their quarterback got suspended for the entire season, doesn't matter though. Bob Stoops always has a tough defense, and Adrian Peterson is a man. A man among boys. He can do some damage offensively. With their quarterback suspended count on Peterson to carry the load even more than he should've. He has a legit chance of 2000 yards. Big 12 is tough, but they are the best the big 12 has to offer. Don't count on teams stopping Peterson, but count on teams containing them enough to not make the national championship. Doesn't matter he will be a top five pick in next years draft.
